Brief Look at Guild Wars 2 and Final Fantasy XIV Expansions

As it turns out, this year (more or less) is proving to be a big year for major MMO expansions.  World of Warcraft’s Warlords of Draenor expansion came out late 2014 and is likely to be Blizzard’s most successful expansion since Wrath of the Lich King in terms of bringing players in, both old and new.  Last Month, ArenaNet has released this trailer for Guild Wars 2’s first expansion, Heart of Thorns.

Now, I’ve had some questionable experiences with Guild Wars 2 and security issues around the time it first came out, but I still hold a special nostalgic place for the original Guild Wars, so I really hope this expansion does well. I look forward to checking out the new Revenant class, because it sounds pretty unique and interesting, and the Guild Wars team has always been great at coming up with character classes. The biggest announcement in my opinion is the reintroduction of Guild Halls. I always thought that the Guild Hall was among the coolest of features in the first Guild Wars games, so I am incredibly excited for that to come to fruition.

ArenaNet also promises what they are calling profession specializations, which is a way to upgrade level 80 characters to give them new unique spells and abilities. There is one specialization coming out for each of the professions including the Revenant. By itself, the new specialization seems underwhelming, but what it really does is make room for more and more specializations to come out as time goes on.

I’ve loved the Guild Wars world ever since I first started playing Factions, so hopefully this expansion lives up to its name. All in all, Guild Wars 2’s new expansion looks very promising, and I will most likely end up giving this game a second chance because of it. Unfortunately, there is no release date available for Heart of Thorns yet.

Finally, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is also getting its very first full on expansion, Heavensward.

Heavensward will come with a new playable race of dragon people, three new classes, and of course some new areas.

While I’ve been very interested in A Realm Reborn, it is one of the few big name MMORPGs that I have not yet played, but this expansion may be a good opportunity to remedy that.
